How to Keep Your Pants Up Without a Belt

You've given belts every chance. The braided one, the ratchet one, the one that promised not to slip. They still dig in when you sit, still need loosening after lunch, and by mid-afternoon your pants are headed south anyway. At some point the question stops being which belt and becomes how to keep your pants up without one.

The short answer: without a belt, the job of holding your pants up goes to one of two places. The pants themselves, with side-tab adjusters, tailoring, or an elastic waist, which works one pair at a time. Or your shoulders, with suspenders, which work on every pair you already own. Suspenders have been doing this for two hundred years; the problem was never whether they work, it was the metal adjustment buckles, the clips that chew up and pop off your pants and the very particular look. Our reengineered suspender design solves all of that. HIKERS® Co. Suspenders, Upfitter® Belt Loop Suspenders that hook onto your belt loops and HIKERS® Button Fly Suspenders that hook onto your waist button, are made in your size with flat hooks so they disappear under an untucked shirt. Nobody has to know how you keep your pants up.

Why the belt keeps failing

A belt does not hold pants up. It holds them in, and it counts on your body to do the up part: a waist that is narrower than the hips below it, so the squeeze has something to rest on. If you carry weight in front, or have a flat seat, that ledge is not there, and no amount of cinching creates one. We cover that body geometry in How to Keep Your Pants Up With a Big Belly.

Even on a body a belt fits, it is a fixed circle on a waist that is not one size all day. It is too tight after a meal and too loose an hour later, and you are the one re-buckling to chase it.

So the fix is not a better belt. It is taking the job away from the squeeze altogether, and there are only two places it can go: the pants or your shoulders.

How to keep pants up without a belt or suspenders

If you would rather keep everything at the waist, every lasting option means changing the pants themselves.

  • Side-tab adjusters. Small straps at each hip, standard on some dress trousers, that cinch the waistband without a buckle. Clean look. They do not adjust through the day, and your waist is not the same size at 8am and 8pm.
  • Tailoring. A tailor takes in a waist for about $15 to $25 a pair. Permanent, per pair, and nobody is tailoring their jeans.
  • Elastic or drawstring waists. Performance chinos and drawstring trousers hold up fine when the fit is right. They solve it only for the pants you replace, and stretch waists relax by evening.
  • Waistband grippers. Silicone strips sewn inside a waistband, common on dress pants. They keep a tucked shirt in place more than they keep pants up.
  • The right rise. Low-rise pants slide because there is nothing above the hips to hold onto. A mid or high rise sits where your body can carry it.

These are all real fixes for the right pair of pants. They are also all per pair, and they all still work by fit or by squeeze. The jeans that finally broke in right, the work pants, the suit trousers: those still need something. That's the job suspenders were built for.

Suspenders: the fix for the pants you already own

Your shoulders sit above your waistband. Anything hung from them stays put without squeezing, which is how overalls have always worked, and it doesn't matter whether the pants are jeans, chinos, or dress trousers. Suspenders can keep up every pair you own.

Traditional suspenders are problematic: metal buckles that dig into your chest and show through a shirt, clips that chew the waistband and pop off under load, one size that fits nobody. HIKERS® Co. reengineered them around those complaints. Every pair is made in your size, so there is no bulky sizing hardware. The hooks are flat, patented, and lock on so they will not pop off. Plus our standard nylon hooks are TSA-friendly, so they stay on through airport security. The strap is soft, flat elastic that sits comfortably against skin. The result disappears under an untucked t-shirt, and most guys aren't tucking in casual shirts anymore.

Two styles, two attachment points:

  • Upfitter® Belt Loop Suspenders, our best-seller. A three-point design that hooks onto the belt loops your pants already have, so they work with any closure, worn under or over your shirt. The same strap comes in a Deluxe version with a leather logo patch and leather rear hook strap, and a Heavy Duty version with a 2" strap for work pants, tool weight, and sizes up to 5X.
  • HIKERS® Button Fly Suspenders, our original design. A two-point setup that hooks onto the waist button of your pants and the center rear belt loop. Any pants with a button closure qualify, which is most jeans, chinos, and shorts. The lightest, most hidden version there is.

Both are built to disappear under an untucked shirt. The difference is where they attach, and whether you ever want to wear them over the shirt, which only Upfitters are made for.

Putting them on

It takes about ten seconds once you have done it once or twice. Upfitter® Belt Loop Suspenders:

  1. Pull your pants on and fasten them where you want the waistband to sit. That height is where they will stay.
  2. Hook the single rear strap onto the center back belt loop.
  3. Bring the two front straps over your shoulders and hook each one onto a front belt loop, one on either side of the fly.
  4. Check the length. Every pair arrives adjusted to its stated size. If you want them snugger, tighten one notch on the hook at the rear strap; each notch is one size.
  5. Shirt under or over.

HIKERS® Button Fly Suspenders go on the same way, with one front strap hooked onto the waist button instead of two on the belt loops, and they are worn under the shirt.

Bathroom breaks are simple: if you need to sit, detach the rear hook, leave the front hooks attached, do your business, and rehook the back when you're done.

After that there is nothing to do until you take them off. No re-buckling after lunch, no hiking your pants up with one hand while the other holds the coffee. The waistband stays where you put it, because nothing is pulling it down and nothing is squeezing it to keep it there.

How to keep jeans up without a belt

Jeans are where belts fail most, and where suspenders are easiest. Denim waistbands stretch as they break in, so a belt keeps tightening on a waist that keeps getting looser underneath it. Suspenders do not care how loose the waist gets; the pants hang at the height you set.

Almost every pair of jeans has belt loops, and most have a sturdy waistband that holds a hook well, so Upfitter® Belt Loop Suspenders go on exactly as above. The hooks lock onto denim loops and will not pop off when you sit, squat, or get in a truck, and under a t-shirt the flat straps and nylon hooks lie invisibly flat. If your jeans have a button closure, which nearly all do, HIKERS® Button Fly Suspenders are a great option.

Either way, the fit comes from the size.

Getting the size right

HIKERS® Co. suspenders are made in your size, which is what lets them be flat. Sizes run like t-shirt sizes, XS to 4X across the line and up to 5X in Heavy Duty, and we ask you to measure: from your center rear belt loop, up over your shoulder, down to your button fly. Match that to the chart on our sizing page. If you land between two sizes, order the larger one. Every pair arrives adjusted to its stated size with two notches to tighten, and size exchanges are free.

Which one should you use?

If the pants in question are dress trousers you wear on rotation, side tabs or a tailor will do it, and you will not think about it again until you buy the next pair. If you are buying new casual pants anyway, an elastic or drawstring waist is a legitimate choice, as long as you are fine with the waist relaxing by evening.

For the pants you already own, suspenders are the only fix that covers all of them at once. Upfitter® Belt Loop Suspenders are where most guys start, because belt loops are on everything and they can be worn under or over a shirt. HIKERS® Button Fly Suspenders are for anyone who wants the least possible under the shirt and has a button closure to hook onto. Keeping your pants up without a belt: FAQs

How do I keep my pants up without a belt?

Hang the pants from your shoulders instead of squeezing your waist. Upfitter® Belt Loop Suspenders from HIKERS® Co. hook onto the belt loops you already have, hold the waistband at the height you set all day, and disappear under an untucked shirt. If you would rather change the pants, side-tab adjusters, tailoring, or an elastic waist work per pair.

What's the most comfortable way to keep jeans up without a belt?

Belt loop suspenders worn under an untucked shirt. Upfitter® Belt Loop Suspenders from HIKERS® Co. hook onto the loops on your jeans and put the weight on your shoulders instead of your stomach. They are made in your size, with flat nylon hooks and no metal buckles, so nothing shows through a t-shirt. For jeans with a button closure, HIKERS® Button Fly Suspenders are the even lighter two-point version.

How can I keep my pants up without a belt or suspenders?

Change the pants: side-tab adjusters, a tailor taking in the waist, or an elastic or drawstring waistband. Each one is permanent and per pair, and none of them adjusts as your waist changes through the day. If your pants fall down because a belt has nothing to grip, they will not fix that.

Is there something better than a belt to keep my pants up?

Yes. A belt works by compressing your waist and relies on your hips to do the holding. Suspenders hold from the shoulders, so they work on any body and never need re-tightening after a meal. The reengineered kind, Upfitter® Belt Loop Suspenders and HIKERS® Button Fly Suspenders from HIKERS® Co., are made in your size with flat hooks, so they do the job without the look.

Will suspenders show under a t-shirt?

Not if they are made for it. HIKERS® Co. suspenders use soft, flat elastic and flat nylon hooks, and they are made in your size, so there is no bulky sizing hardware under the shirt. Traditional suspenders with metal buckles are the kind that show.

Why do my pants keep falling down even with a belt?

Because a belt needs a ledge to rest on, and if your belly is the widest point of your torso, or you have a flat seat, there is no ledge. We cover that body geometry and how to set up suspenders for it in How to Keep Your Pants Up With a Big Belly.
